Exploring the future of the Information Society with SELFOC® technology

In 1968, NSG successfully invented a unique method to form parabolic refractive index distribution in glass rod. The new technology was named SELFOC® because of its “self-focusing” nature. Since then, NSG has been continuing to research, develop, and manufacture a variety of optoelectronic technologies/products as a pioneer in the micro optics field.

  • SELFOC® Lens Array (SLA)
  • SELFOC® Lens Array (SLA) is typically composed of one or two rows of micro gradient-index lenses (SELFOC® lenses) arranged in an array. SLA realizes a very compact optical system and forms a continuous linear image with little distortion, and it is used as a key component in various applications: contact image sensors (CIS) for multi-function printers and industrial inspection machines, and LED print heads (LPH) for LED printers.
  • SELGUIDE®
  • SELGUIDE® is a linear LED light source for image scanning that provides high light intensity and excellent uniformity at a low cost and with low power consumption. It is usually used in contact image sensors (CIS) in combination with SELFOC® Lens Array (SLA).
  • SELFOC® Micro Lens (SML)
  • SELFOC® Micro Lens (SML) is a single gradient-index lens (SELFOC® lens) mainly used in telecommunications and imaging applications. The cylindrical shape of SML allows the lens to be easily aligned and mounted, and the lens exhibits excellent coupling efficiency. It is ideal for coupling and collimating lens for telecommunication devices, and imaging lens for various endoscopes and microscopes.

  • We provide high-performance sheet glass with various functions for stage glass and cover glass for copiers, multi-function printers, and scanners.

Product List

SELFOC® Lens Array (SLA) is typically composed of one or two rows of micro gradient-index lenses (SELFOC® lenses) arranged in an array. The images from adjacent lenses overlap and form a continuous linear 1:1 image, and with this unique feature, it is used as a key component in a broad range of line scanning systems and electrophotographic printing systems.

In addition to the current broad product lineup, we have recently developed a brand new lens called "SLA-5" to meet the rapidly growing demand for the industrial inspection market. With twice the depth of focus (DOF) of the conventional SLA, the new lens array can be used in an even wider range of machine vision applications. NSG will continue its development activities to meet the diverse requirements of various customers.



Advantages

  1. Simple and compact optical system
    The remarkably short working distance (L0) of SLA, ranging from around 2 to 20mm, allows to significantly reduce the overall size of the system. In addition, since SLA forms an erect 1:1 image, the lens array does not require any other lenses or mirrors in the system, unlike ordinary lenses. With this feature, SLA realizes a very simple and cost-competitive optical system.
  2. Easy installation
    Because of its flat form, SLA does not require any specific lens holders, and its placement is extremely simple and easy compared with ordinary lenses.
  3. Uniform linear image with little distortion
    SLA provides uniform resolution and light intensity over its entire length, whereas ordinary lenses have peripheral distortion.
  4. Broad product lineup
    Various types of lens products are available in terms of size and optical performance depending on the applications and requirements. The maximum width of SLA is up to approximately 1m.

SELGUIDE® is a linear light source that NSG has developed based on its unique optical technology. It provides high light intensity and excellent uniformity with just one LED module, which enables lower cost and lower power consumption at the same time. SELGUIDE® is used as a linear illumination for contact image sensors (CIS) in combination with SELFOC® Lens Array (SLA). Also, we successfully developed a new SELGUIDE® that uses general-purpose LED instead of customized LED, and started providing this remarkably cost-competitive solution to the market.

SELFOC® Micro Lens (SML) is a single gradient-index lens (SELFOC® lens) mainly used in telecommunications and imaging applications. Due to its cylindrical, flat-end shape, SML can be easily aligned and mounted, and the lens is ideal for coupling and collimating lens for telecommunication devices, and imaging lens for endoscopes and microscopes.

  1. Extremely easy handling
    The cylindrical shape of SML makes its handling, alignment, and mounting simple and easy. 
  2. Minimum transmission loss
    With its small aberration, the transmission loss of SML is minimal when used with other optical components or fibers. 
  3. Compact size
    The size of SML is extremely small compared with ordinary lenses, its diameter ranging from Φ0.25mm to Φ4.00mm depending on the lens type. With its compact dimensions, SML can be used in ultra-compact devices where ordinary lenses are not suitable due to size limitations.

IL is commonly used as an objective lens in small-diameter imaging systems such as medical and industrial fiberscopes, rigid endoscopes, miniature fluorescence microscopes, etc.

    SELFOC® Rod Lens (SRL) is designed as a relay lens for small-diameter imaging systems, and it is used in rigid endoscopes often in conjunction with SELFOC® Imaging Lens (IL).

Product Family

  • Chemically strengthened glass
    By submersing sheet glass in a bath of molten salt, the ion exchange process forms a compression layer on the glass surface, which results in increased toughness. We provide chemically strengthened sheet glass products with more than five times the toughness of ordinary glass.
  • Transparent Conductive Coating Glass
    While ordinary glass is electrically non-conductive, we provide conductive sheet glass products by forming transparent metal film on the glass surface.
  • Anti-finger Coating Glass
    Using special coating with extremely high stain-resistant performance, we offer glass products that prevent fingerprints, stain, dirt, etc. over a long period of time.

Reinforcement material with excellent adhesion to rubber   

MICROGLAS® CORD under the NGF brand provides linear reinforcement of rubber goods. Special treatments applied to continuous glass fiber filaments provide great flexibility and direct adhesion within the rubber product. Because of its superior properties, such as tensile strength, flexural fatigue resistance, dimensional stability, and heat resistance, MICROGLAS® CORD is used as reinforcing material in a variety of applications such as timing belts for automobiles, power transmission belts for various machines, extruded rubber profiles, tires, woven fabrics and industrial brushes.
Glass cords can be supplied with specialty treatments for enhanced adhesion to EPDM rubbers and polyurethane  – as well as more traditional  chloroprene and HNBR rubbers. In addition to glass fibers, organic fibers (aramids, etc.) and carbon fibers can be selected as the reinforcement by itself or as part of a hybrid cord construction combining different fiber types. Based on the requirements of the application, various cord designs are available with respect to the type of fiber, cord diameter, core material, number of twists and treatment type.

MICROGLAS® GLASFLAKE® comes in scale-like glass flakes, each flake ranging from 10 to 4000μm (4 mm) in diameter with 2 or 5μm mean thickness. Utilizing its own proprietary technology, NSG Group is the only manufacturer of glass flakes in Japan. 

Two types of glass are used for GLASFLAKE®, namely, C glass and E glass. C glass contains alkali components and has high acid resistance. E glass contains almost no alkali and so, it has high stability in resin and no electrical conductivity. For each type, NSG Group also offers surface treatment to improve compatibility with resins.

FLEKA® is granulated GLASFLAKE® with E glass, achieving excellent processing and reinforcement when mixed into resins. A finer version, FINEFLAKE®, is also available with an average thickness of 0.4 to 1 μm, which is suitable for fine and thin molded plastic products.

Applications

GLASFLAKE® is widely used in industrial fields. Flakes with C glass composition are used for coating and lining as anti-corrosion materials. Flakes with E glass composition are very effective in preventing warpage and improving dimensional accuracy in precision parts made of thermoplastic resin.

Molded plastic products
Low warpage, dimensionally stable glass flakes can be selected according to the requirement for molded plastic products.

FLEKA® (granulated glass flake)
FLEKA® is granulated glass flakes with E glass, having better compatibility with resins and excellent processability due to smooth feeding and less dust.

FINEFLAKE®

GLASFLAKE® for anticorrosion lining
GLASFLAKE® for anticorrosion lining is shaped like scales. Since alkali glass (C glass) is used, the glass itself has outstanding acid resistant. The flakes in layers provide a "barrier effect" on the coating and surface lining to extend their service life, prevent them from cracking and improve chemical resistance. 


Main Advantages

  • Thickness, particle size and surface treatment method can be selected according to your construction method or location.
  • Improved coating performance: Grade surface-treated with an appropriate silane coupling agent to further improve coating performance.
  • Good for places where lining is difficult: Use of two-micron thickness type (RCF-2300) can reduce the film thickness, opening up an opportunity for locations where lining is difficult with the conventional five-micron thickness type.
  • Improve gas permeability: Gas permeability can be reduced by adding GLASFLAKE® to resins and rubber due to its properties.

The Polymic® separator is a highly durable, porous separator made primarily from special polyethylene and silica particles. Its workability allows the battery assembly line to run efficiently. This high-grade separator meets today’s severe conditions while ensuring high performance and long service life. Polymic® separators are shaped into a sheet with ribs and are normally shipped in rolls.

AGM Separator is a wet-laid non-woven material composed of fine diameter glass fibers. It is primarily used for valve regulated lead acid batteries for use in transportation (automotive, motorcycle, train, etc.), motive power (mining, industrial truck, etc.), and stationary (UPS, network, solar, etc.). With excellent elasticity, high acid resistance, and extra-fine pores, the separator’ s function is to separate the positive and negative plates inside the battery, while allowing the battery acid (or electrolyte) to pass through the separator during charging and discharging. The separator also prevents active materials from falling off and forming a “bridge” between the positive and negative plates that could cause shorting or premature failure, maintains electrolyte levels inside of the battery, and allows the gas generated on the anode to be rapidly transferred to the cathode and be absorbed.

 

Characteristics

  • Wide range of thickness: Standard grades are available between 0.4mm to 3.0mm, while advanced grades are available less than 0.3mm for downsizing and space-saving purposes.
  • High porosity: Having more than 90% porosity, it is capable of absorbing and maintaining a large quantity of electrolytes.
  • High heat resistance: Primarily made of glass fibers, it has a high heat resistance (up to 350℃).
  • Small pore size: The average pore size within the NSG lineup is between 2-10μm with the maximum size of 10-35μm.
  • High hydrophilicity: It has a high hydrophilicity and capable of absorbing water up to 1-meter high.
  • Incombustibility: Primarily made of glass fibers, it is incombustible.

Sleeve Tubes are braded continuous glass fiber and resin treated for superior acid resistance. The tubes are commonly used as the separator for positive plate of Clad type lead-acid batteries.
With the high performance of electrolyte absorption, acid resistance, and tensile strength, active materials are fully filled within the mesh of Sleeve Tubes to prevent the active material from shedding.
