- Contributes to significant reductions in electricity costs and carbon emission at Collingwood plant -

The NSG Group has partnered with Convergent Energy + Power (Convergent) to provide a battery storage system at its Pilkington glass plant in Collingwood, Ontario, Canada, in line with the Group’s initiatives that reduce energy consumption and carbon (CO2) emission.

The battery storage installation represents the Group’s first mutually beneficial cooperation between an energy storage developer and a glass manufacturing plant.

The 5 MW / 10 MWh battery energy storage system has been fully operational since earlier this year and uses Convergent’s PEAK IQ® proprietary software to reduce the facility’s electricity usage during the most costly, carbon-intensive grid consumption peaks.

The project was constructed during the 2020-21 winter season, at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. To ensure the Group would be able to achieve projected savings of ~CAD450,000 / MW, Convergent construction teams adhered to particularly strict safety regulations. Convergent also coordinated with local partners to ensure pandemic-related travel restrictions did not slow down construction while navigating extensive supply chain disruptions.

This battery storage system is also part of the Group’s commitment to support its community in Collingwood and the broader efforts in Ontario to create a more efficient, sustainable grid. The NSG Group values Convergent’s expertise from system design to dispatch, bringing the battery storage system online as quickly and safely as possible during the pandemic.

With the Medium Term Vision of becoming a global glass supplier contributing to the world with high value-added glass products and services, the NSG Group aims to achieve 2 percent p.a. reduction in carbon emissions (scopes 1 and 2) during the three-year period of the Revival Plan 24, with a view to achieve 21 percent reduction in 2030 compared to the 2018 levels and further to lay out its roadmap to achieve carbon neutrality by disruptive innovation.
